Leaning Rib Coffee Cozy ~Free Pattern~

Leaning Rib Coffee Cozy

About a month ago, I promised that I would post this pattern up on the blog. I submitted in to Ravelry last December after designing it as a White Elephant gift. (and I still can't convince the recipient that they weren't originally meant to be wrist warmers)
I’m also a little bit of a coffee fiend. I love coffee to the point where it is almost addiction. (Nevermind that!) So I wanted to come up with a cozy that I could slip on to my cup to keep my hands cool and my coffee hot.

Yarn: Scrap worsted weight yarn (at least 30 yards, more depending on wanted length). I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Solid yarn.

Needles: 2  US 7 circular needles (or 4 DPNs)

Fit: Any normal coffee to‐go cup

Directions:
Cast on 40 stitches over your two circular needles. (Or using your favorite in‐the‐round method)
Join in a round without twisting
Round 1&2: Knit 2, Purl 2 until end of round
Round 3&4: Purl 1, *Knit 2, Purl 2* *until end of round
Round 5&6: Purl 2, Knit 2 until end of round
Round 7&8: Knit 1, *Purl 2, Knit 2* *until end of round
Repeat Round 1‐8 until cozy is 3 inches in length.
Bind off loosely. If bind off is too tight, the cozy will not fit on the cup. Weave in ends and enjoy!

WIP Wednesday ~April 27th, 2011~

Holey Crap! It's Wednesday again? How do these things keep creeping up on me?

The days start to blur together when weekends don't exist for a few weeks, but I'm starting to finally see some data at the end of the tunnel. (Yay Science!) I'm presenting what I've come up with so far to The Bossman and the labmates tomorrow. Here's hoping I make it through another public speaking endeavor.

Oh yeah, I was supposed to be knitting this week too...

My Bruised Socks has been chugging along. I'm passed the gusset on this first one. Again, Lab Rat was willing to model it today while I'm trapped in the lab after hours.  I hope no one walked by while I was taking this picture, I probably looked pretty goofy getting him ready for his close-up.

My lacy shawl has been sadly neglected. Its been too hectic for anything needing concentration. I've also been working on the sock blankie this week, adding about 6 squares. It's definitely a great project for when I need to knit, but can't think clearly enough for anything complicated. Sadly, I do not have some new pictures for you of the blankie since I'm lab bound for a while, but Blankie will get it's own post soon enough!

WIP Wednesday - First Edition!

This is my first edition of WIP Wednesdays.  I saw this suggestion on The Blog Hub group on Ravelry, and thought it might give my blog a little more structure. So, what's on my needles?

Bruised Socks
These are are a simple 2x2 ribbing sock (60 stitches) in Claudia Handpainted Yarn (Argyle2). These socks were a pain to get started. I was having terrible pooling problems with splotches of black, but finally found a stitch count/pattern combo that shows off the colors beautifully.

I'm almost too proud of the name "Bruised Socks". Get it? They're black and blue!

Lab Rat love handknit socks!

Misti Alpaca Swallowtail Shawl
As my first laceweight lace project, I've also cast on and ripped it this poor little thing at least a half a dozen times before I learned about lifelines.

Mystery socks..no longer a mystery!

I finished my March Mystery Socks (and yes, I know it's April).

I was so proud of myself for keeping up with the clues each week so I could keep up with the knit-a-long. Sadly, once that fourth clue came out I was distracted by that dastardly sweater and some pretty new lace. I was able to resist those temptresses long enough to finish the toes these socks that have been lamenting the past two weeks.

I don't understand why I waited so long to finish them. I think they gorgeous. Once I got them on my feet, I couldn't stop taking pictures. And of course, I finished them at about 1 a.m., so great light was hard to come by.

Submissions and Sweaters

Two weeks of reading and writing, including three 14 hours days, have resulted in my final draft for my  application. The instructions guide indicated that it takes 18 hours of work to complete the application - lying piece of paper!

I was able to do a little mindless knitting in between the last few drafts, while waiting for feedback from my boss.  I finished the body section of Wicked. It was late at night when this shot was taken, hopefully once its done I'll be able to get some good ones in the sunshine!

Though it still needs blocking (and arms) I really like the way that it turned out. I added some shaping to accommodate my hips and give it more of an hourglass shape. It is a little tight around the middle, but I'm hoping that blocking with help it stretch just a little. I've heard rumors that Berraco Vintage tends to grow a little when blocked.

Initially, I was planning on doing 3/4 sleeves, but I'm leaning closer to doing short sleeves. This will give it a little more wear time for the Texas heat comes in to settle.

And I wasn't the only one with an exhausting week:

Science halts knitting - NRSA edition

I have no pretty pictures this time. This week, I'm trying to finish writing my resubmission application for the National Research Service Award (NRSA). Also known as: convincing scientists that I could be a good one too.

If I wasn't writing this fellowship I would be telling you about all sorts of fun things! For example:

- I turned 25 this week - I'm quarter of century old now.
- My best friends surprised with a cake at midnight - definitely surprising me - and bearing science related gifts.
- The love of my life gifted me tons of laceweight yarn for that shawl I've been thinking about making forever.
- Went to a yarn festival at The Woolie Ewe - Bought my first Noro yarn
- Getting super excited for DFW's fiber festival
- The lack of progress I have made on any project on the needles.

That's what I would be talking about if science wasn't halting knitting.
